History and facts of Great Wall of China (China)

The Great Wall of China is a massive series of fortifications constructed to protect the northern borders of China from invasions and raids. The wall's history spans over 2,000 years, with initial construction dating back to the 7th century BC, during the Warring States period. However, the most well-known sections were built and connected during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

Stretching over 13,000 miles (21,196 km) across diverse landscapes, the Great Wall features walls, watchtowers, and natural barriers like rivers and hills. The wall's purpose was to safeguard Chinese territories and facilitate trade along the Silk Road.

The Great Wall is not a single continuous structure but a collection of walls built and rebuilt over centuries. It served as a symbol of Chinese strength and unity, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Despite its formidable reputation, the wall was not an impenetrable defense, as historical records reveal numerous invasions and breaches. Nevertheless, the Great Wall remains an engineering marvel and a testament to ancient Chinese civilization's ingenuity and determination.

Today, the Great Wall attracts millions of tourists annually, making it one of the most iconic and visited landmarks worldwide.
